01 — Problem

A building supplies shop lives on its catalogue: customers want filters, prices and photos before they call. This demo shows how I tidy up a WordPress and WooCommerce shop when rebuilding it from scratch makes no sense.

02 — Decisions

  1. A catalogue you can browse

27 products in 6 categories, 5 on sale. Filters by category and price, category pills and two columns on phones.

  2. AI photos ready for Google Shopping

Every product has a packshot on a light background and an “in use” scene in the gallery. Photos are AI-generated (Google Flow), brands are fictional.

  3. Fixes in one mu-plugin

Home page prices pulled from the shop instead of typed by hand; empty stars, a fake newsletter and a second H1 removed. A theme update will not overwrite any of it.

  4. Nothing third-party on load

Local fonts, Google Maps only after a click, no emoji script. Logo from 128 to 15 KB, hero from 300 to 89 KB, 184 thumbnails in WebP.

  5. No more jumping page

The “demo version” bar was pushing content down. Pinned in place, it took layout shift (CLS) from 0.166 to 0.001.

03 — Result

Same WordPress, same admin panel, a different shop: mobile performance from 83 to 90, 99 on desktop, and the layout no longer jumps.

05 — Google sees

What this website tells search engines and AI

  • Every product carries Product structured data with a priced offer.
  • The WordPress sitemap: 27 products and 6 product categories.
  • robots.txt closes off the cart, the admin and the WooCommerce logs.
  • To be fair: the home page still lacks a meta description and Open Graph — that is the next step.
